Benefits
DID YOU KNOW...
Everyone benefits from the SOIL AND WATER side of the Missouri Parks and Soils Sales Tax? EVERYONE includes both, Farming AND Urban Communities!
The Parks and Soils sales tax is aimed toward reducing soil erosion on shrinking agricultural acres by maintaining a voluntary statewide cost-share program.
Soil erosion claims 70 million tons of Missouri top soil each year. Sediment is the number one pollutant of Missouri waters and each grain of soil washed from the land can carry pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals.
It takes 500 years to produce an inch of top soil, but at an erosion rate of 5.6 ton per acre, an inch of top soil erodes in less than 30 years.
The Cost-Share program promotes the use of research and technical training by farmers and ranchers to voluntarily practice measures to prevent polluting surface and ground water.
The Cost-Share program protects soil, water, timber and wildlife resources through voluntary participation in incentive and cost-share projects.
Technical assistance for preventing degradation of natural resources on private property resulting in increased property value.
Assistance given to local government entities to help in developing local ordinances and regulations to enhance and protect both private and public property.
Information available at the District office on soil and water resources within the county that would help developers select the best management practices.
Outreach programs available from the District involving soil, water, air, plant and animal resources that can be tailored to meet the needs of teachers, students, scout or community groups of all ages.
The Parks and Soils Sales Tax is one-tenth of one cent.
For example: $100.00 sales tax paid would generate 10 cents.
This sales tax is shared 50/50 with Missouri State Parks.
